Equating and validating qualifications

Equating determines the equal value of foreign qualifications against recognised Ugandan qualifications such as UCE and UACE and sets entry points (performance). Validating ensures qualifications from other countries are recognised within the Ugandan educational framework.

Equating should be authorised by the relevant body — UNEB for pre-tertiary qualifications or the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) for post-secondary qualifications. Ambiguities should be referred to the Academic Registrar as the supreme Officer of Admissions.

Meeting deadlines

Applicants must submit completed applications at least two (2) weeks before the advertised start date of the intake to ensure programme placement and preparation of studies.
Late applications may be considered. Conditional admission may be offered for one (1) semester pending missing documentation, which must be submitted before the end of that semester.
All applicants coming from high school shall be offered provisional admission pending official UNEB or equivalent results slips.

Entry pathways

General provisions of admission by programme level — sourced from IUEA Admissions guidelines.

Direct entry into a Master’s programme

Normally a Bachelor’s degree of at least second class, lower division or equivalent from a recognised university
Applicants with lower qualifications must satisfy the department and Postgraduate Admissions Board of academic growth (e.g. research/publications or a relevant Postgraduate Diploma of Second Class)
In some departments, a qualifying course followed by examination is given

Direct entry into a Bachelor’s programme

At least five (5) passes at UCE (or equivalent) obtained at the same sitting
At least two (2) principal passes at UACE (or equivalent) obtained at the same sitting
Admission conditional on verification of official UNEB results slips

Direct entry into a Diploma programme

At least five (5) passes at UCE (or equivalent) obtained at the same sitting
At least one (1) principal pass at UACE (or equivalent) obtained at the same sitting
Or a Higher Education Certificate with a ‘pass’ classification
Admission conditional on verification of official UNEB results slips

Diploma holder’s entry into a Bachelor’s degree

Accredited Diploma (or equivalent) from a recognised institution
Credit classification may allow direct entry into year two of a Bachelor’s programme
Pass classification typically enters year one of a Bachelor’s programme

Direct entry into a Higher Education Certificate

UACE with at least two subsidiary passes (or equivalent)
Or Vocational Qualifications at level 2 or 3 of the Uganda Vocational Qualifications Framework
Or qualifications equivalent to UACE as determined by NCHE in consultation with UNEB
Foreign students without UACE who completed secondary school and are admissible to degree/diploma programmes in their home country — at least five subjects with minimum overall grade C (Plain); English proficiency required if prior study was not in English

Foundation / HEC holders into Diploma or Bachelor’s

Accredited Foundation or Higher Education Certificate (or equivalent)
Eligible for Diploma entry with a ‘pass’ mark
Eligible for Bachelor’s entry with a ‘credit’ or higher classification

International applicants

Evidence of qualifications from recognised institutions in the home country or country of study
13-year education system: may be considered for Diploma or Bachelor pending UNEB equating
12-year education system: may enter a Degree if admitted and studied one year in tertiary education in that country, pending NCHE equating
Otherwise complete a Foundation or Higher Education Certificate
Conditional admission for one semester pending equating via UNEB or NCHE

Mature age entry

Applicants over 25 years without standard entrance requirements are encouraged to apply
Must have passed an accredited Mature Age Entrance Examination with a pass mark of 50% through an NCHE-approved centre

Exemptions or special entry

Require special consideration from Faculty Admissions Boards and Senate
Governed by IUEA policies on Exemption and Credit Accumulation and Transfer
